There are many ways of assessing one’s degree of foreign language proficiency, each with its own advantages and drawbacks. Minimally, clients beginning the Wave program are able to sustain at least one hour of reasonably fluid conversation covering a range of topics, from everyday life and current events, to technical matters relating to their domains of professional expertise.

At this level, English language exchange can require considerable mental and physical effort, and many mistakes will be made. Those are both good things: effort over time builds stamina and mistakes show us where our attention is needed. If prospective clients are able to make themselves understood, and to understand most of what their anglophone interlocutor is saying, they are likely ready for the advanced language coaching we offer. For another perspective, this minimum threshold might correspond to a B2 or C1 reference level within the six-level scale of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) developed by the Council of Europe.

At Wave, we take our commitment to delivering transformative English results very seriously. For this reason, it’s important for us to ensure that our vision for private language coaching aligns with our clients’ expectations and goals, before beginning an engagement. When we feel we might not be the best partner for a prospective client for one reason or another, we say so.

Coach availability also impacts our ability to accept new clients. As a small boutique whose services are in high demand, beginning a collaboration sometimes means having a bit of patience until the availability of coaches matches that of the prospective client. We don’t begin engagements unless we’re confident that coaching can be provided for the duration of our program.

We use a variable pricing model that takes into account two factors. First, we consider the seniority of the client, which, for our lawyer clients, we typically measure relative to the year he or she joined the bar. Second, we take into account the two distinct rhythms of our coaching program, the intensive foundational phase, and the relatively less intensive maintenance phase.

We are proud to have held Qualiopi certification, the French national quality certification mark for training providers, since 2021. However, as our coaching doesn’t lead to a registered certification such as a diploma or standardized test certificate (TOEIC, etc.), we are not able to accept the CPF.

Yes. All prospective Wave clients are required to complete an introductory series of four coaching sessions before beginning a longer-term engagement. This “Discovery Series” of sessions is an opportunity for us to get to know one another better, and for prospective clients to test the Wave Method to be sure it’s right for them. It’s also an opportunity to answer any additional questions the prospect might have about the way we work, and to test a preliminary schedule for the sessions. The “Discovery Series” does not apply to short-term coaching engagements.

We have over a decade of experience providing one-off, targeted coaching to prepare clients for a diverse range of English language challenges. In particular, we offer a structured and strategically oriented training sequence to help our lawyer clients prepare for promotion and recruitment processes with both international and French firms. Please note that higher rates apply for one-off engagements.

All of Wave’s coaches are North American, so the short answer is: American English. Having said this, in our experience, the linguistic challenges that our clients face, and that our method and program have been designed to tackle, have virtually nothing to do with regional distinctions.

A significant part of the value our clients bring to their own professional contexts is jurisdictional, and from this perspective is directly tied to being a native or fluent speaker of a language other than English. Further, the idea that there are “standard” accents in any language is something we don’t subscribe to.

For this reason, while we certainly invest a considerable amount of effort into work on pronunciation, we don’t offer specialized services intended to modify or neutralize accents. On the contrary, at Wave we encourage our clients to embrace their roots and to cultivate their own unique voices in English.
